Morta Skuld: Through the eyes of death

Morta Skuld were a death metal act hailing from the US that were active in the 90’s before changing their name and style to become a shitty nu-metal band at the end of the decade. “Through the Eyes of Death”, released in 2011, is not a reunion of this band but a re-release of the bands first two demos and a couple of previously hard to get tracks. The first demo (“Gory Departure”) is the better of the two, bringing some old school death groovin’ and chuggin’ reminiscent of classic Obituary. The second demo (“Prolong the Agony”) is darker and heavier, though less catchy. The production job here is excellent, being dirty enough to retain that gritty demo feel without sounding like a demo. In many ways this record, despite the age of the songs, comes as a refreshing listen for a fan of old school death metal (like me), as it is completely devoid of any modern trends, and is filled with plenty of great grooves and thrashing riffs.

6.5/10 – Not outstanding, but still solid old school death metal that is genuinely worth a listen for fans of the genre.
